The long awaited (snort) next chapter of Poison! I'm in ur internetz, cloggin ur FList.

(Part 1 can be found here)

“Jesus, did someone run over your cat? And what the hell happened to your shoes?” The look in Mina’s eyes as she glanced up was hot enough to melt steel.

“Shut up Zane,” she snapped as she shrugged out of her jacket, struggling for a moment as one arm got caught in the sleeve; she eventually shook it free and whipped the offending garment blindly over her shoulder in frustration. The young man behind the computer desk laughed before turning back to the screen and typing a few keys.

Zane Król, Mina’s partner and friend, was a twenty-six year old computer wiz turned hacker, known around the world as “Zoisite.” There was no computer system he couldn’t master and no person he couldn’t find.
Zane had been one of Mina’s marks during her time with Interpol, but she as she tracked him she slowly came to realize he was a greater asset on the outside rather than in prison.

After Mina left Interpol the two had teamed up and now they worked as a perfect team. Once they got their job, Zane found their mark and Mina brought them it.
Their base was an abandoned warehouse near the Port of Tokyo. The building had been gutted and renovated until it was a state of the art facility with more high tech machinery than Mina cared to wonder at.

The upper floor was used as their living quarters; bedrooms, kitchen and common room, while the lower floor was the hub of their business. Desks lined the walls, all covered with the black bodies of computers, wires running back and forth like lifelines.  One corner was devoted the to security system that Zane had built from scratch. It was his pride and joy and completely impenetrable; both from physical and digital danger.
One wall of the room was no longer a real wall, but a floor to ceiling screen that ran a continual feed on all the most wanted men and women of the world. Pictures, bios and facts about the people and their syndicates filled the screen at all times; like a stock ticker on wall street.

The room was a whirling crescendo of information and technology and Zane was its maestro.

Muttering under her breath Mina ducked into the bathroom at the back of the building and started rolling up her jeans, the tight  fit hindering her some. She climbed onto the counter, turned on the faucet and pumped a liberal amount of soap into her hand before scrubbing at her street blackened feet with a vengeance.

Zane appeared in the doorway after a moment. Mina didn’t look up at him, intent on her task, but she could just picture how he looked: arms casually crossed over his chest as his sinewy frame leaned against the door, one long leg crossed in front of the other. His bottle green eyes were probably dancing with amusement and a smirk was tugging at the corner of his well defined mouth.

“Well?” he prompted.

“I lost the mark,” she grumbled.

“Skilling? He was cake, what the hell happened Mina?” Zane raked a hand through his long hair and sighed.

“Hand me that towel, please?” Moving forward Zane yanked the pale yellow bit of terrycloth from the rack. “First tell me what happened,” he teased, dangling it just out of her reach.

“Some jackass got in the way,” she snapped, leaning forward to snatch the towel out of his hands.

Zane nodded slowly, watching as she dried her feet, still not meeting his eye.  “I see,” he said slowly. “Might that be the same jackass that followed you here?”

“What!?” Mina slipped down from the counter top and slapped the towel on the floor. “That stupid ass!” She stormed out of the bathroom heading toward the surveillance cameras screaming, show me!

Zane meandered after her, hands in his pockets. Entering the room calmly he found her at one desk, pounding on a keyboard. “Get this thing to work!” she yelled.

“Settle down, would you?” He brushed her aside and typed in a command bringing up a view of the street outside. “See that?”

“A PHC? That’s it?” Mina shrugged incredulously.

“Ah, ah, dear one. Not just any personal hovercraft,” he typed in another command bringing the vehicle into better detail; all sleek lines and shined until you could practically hear it ding! under the lamp light.

“It is a top of the line, military regulation PHC, complete with radar cloaking device, infrared tracking system and brand spanking new barrel guns. You think anyone on the wharfs has access to those? Let alone the means?” Zane eyed it with growing envy.

“Shit, why did he follow me?” Mina bolted from her chair and started pacing. “He can’t get in, though, right? You made this place a fortress.” She turned back and smiled at Zane. “So I shouldn’t have to worry, right?”

“Oh, ye of little faith.” Jace said as he appeared in a corner, a smirk on his lips as he admired a cluster of computers. “I will give your friend credit though, for having such a complex system.”

“And how the hell did you get through it?” Zane started typing furiously, trying to find the weak point. He was infuriated; no one had ever broken through his security system before, but he was also impressed…. no one had broken through his security system before.

“I can’t give away my secrets, now can I?” Jace stared at Zane before pulling out the PC with Mina’s information and flicking through the information. “I don’t think I have you in here though.”

“Better not.” Zane growled, still typing rapidly. “I work very hard to keep myself off the grid. Keeps me from getting entangled with various law enforcement agencies, General Sendoa.”

Jace looked up, only mildly surprised. “How do you know my name?”

“I have my ways,” Zane smiled and swiveled his screen around for the other man to see.  Jace sat his PC down on the desk and leaned forward; there was a full color picture of his induction into Silver Alliance, which had been a closed affair, and to the side was a readout of his information.

“You’re very thorough,” he nodded, reaching up to brush back blond bangs.

“It would seem you are too,” Zane commented as he scrolled through Mina’s information.

“You’re sneaky too, I see.”  He smiled genially.

“It’s a way to get by,” Zane smiled and handed the device back. But Jace only shook his head, “keep it. I don’t want to get trailed.”

Zane blinked a couple of times before laughing out loud.

“Right, if you two are done flirting. Can you please tell me what the hell you’re doing here?” Mina growled.

“I told you, I want to recruit you. And I  should warn you now that I don’t take no for an answer.” He smiled at her charmingly before turning and flopping down onto one of the many black computer chairs that littered the floor like monoliths.

“Well I suggest you start, because I’m not signing up. I’m through with the government, organizations, leaders and followers… all that!  It’s nothing but trouble. Screw the ‘greater good’, I’m out for myself now.” Mina sat down in a chair, crossed her arms over her chest and huffed out her breath; ruffling the fine hairs that framed her face.

Jace clicked his tongue. “Now how did such a young lady get to be so cynical?”

“Have you seen the world lately?” She snorted, sulking lower in her chair.

“Then why attend the Royal Academy? Or enlist with Interpol?”  Jace leaned forward, his elbow resting on the computer desk at his side, and regarded her like a therapist with a new patient.

“Well, General, cynics aren’t made overnight,” she explained tersely. “No, they start out as rash young girls and boys who want nothing more than to change the world!“ Mina raised her hands to wiggle her fingers, a look of mocking delight contorting her pretty features, until she settled back with a more somber expression.

“They dream of turning the world into some utopia of peace. They eventually turn into cynics when they see that everyone around them, the very people they look up to and respect, are bought off and corrupt. Then they realize their dreams are for naught and your cynic is born.”

“Damn, Mina, you sound too much like Rei.” Zane said as he twirled in his chair, idly staring at the ceiling.

“So what? It’s all true, and you know it.” Mina wrinkled her nose at the back of Zane's blond head.

“Who or what is Rei?” Jace cut in.

“Our ninja. Doubt she’s in your records either.” Zane whispered behind his hand.

“Hino Rei, she’s our new colleague. And she’s not a ninja, Zane.” Mina rolled her eyes.

“She‘s into ancient Japanese rituals, is secretive, stealthy, has a panache for black clothes AND carries a sword. If that doesn’t make her a ninja, I don’t know what does!” A dark figure appeared at that moment, as if on cue, and breezed by Zane, whacking him on the back of the head before coming to a halt next to Mina’s chair.

The figure, Jace noted, was a petite, dark haired woman with naturally pale skin and a lean, graceful figure; much like a dancer. The woman was clad in tight leather pants that looked like they had been cut apart and jaggedly sewn back together, and there was a random smattering of zippers and buckles up and down the legs.
A dark purple t-shirt was stretched over her chest and exposed her stomach and a large expanse of smooth, creamy skin.  There was an empty holster strapped to her thigh and over all this she wore a long black trench.

She impatiently shoved a chunk of her ebony hair over one shoulder, and sighed at Zane. “I am not a ninja, you baka. I study Japanese history because it’s my culture and it’s interesting, and I have the katana,” she stressed, ”because it’s an heirloom that belonged to my grandfather.”

Jace must’ve made some sort of noise because at that moment dark, almond shaped eyes swiveled over to him.  He could not distinguish the color, though, only their fathomless beauty.  The woman, however, regarded him as she might a stain on her shirt. “We have an intruder,” her voice was bored as one dark eyebrow rose slightly in question.

Before anyone could make a comment she turned her back on Jace and walked a few feet, bending to rummage through a small cooler hidden under one of the desks.

“Not just any intruder, Rei, one from Silver Alliance!” Zane informed her with a broad smile. The woman, Rei, straightened up, opening her drink of choice.

“Joy,” she deadpanned before taking a dainty sip.

“Would you like an introduction?” Zane shrugged, still grinning at Rei. She merely shrugged a shoulder, “I have a choice?”

“Not really. Hino Rei, this is General Jace Sendoa. Jace this is Rei.” The blond turned to Jace, “and I’m Zane Król. There, now we’re all acquainted!” Leaning back in his chair he laced his fingers over his stomach and started twisting his chair from side to side.

“Lovely, now you can leave.” Mina smiled brightly at Jace as she stood up. “Let me show you the way…”

“Won’t you at least hear me out?” Mina sank back down in her chair and glanced at Zane and Rei before sighing in defeat. “Fine.”

“Excellent!” Jace spread his arms wide, a smile on his face. He waited a moment while Rei took a seat. She rested one arm over the back and crossed her legs; completely uninterested.

“Do you know the story behind Silver Alliance?” He paused a moment, letting the question hang in the air. When no one seemed willing to take the bait he continued.

“Several galaxies away from our humble home, is a world we know as Isis. The queen of that planet is named Selene, an intelligent and benevolent monarch. The people there aren’t immortal, but their lives are considerably longer than ours; my life, for instance, is little more than a blink of an eye to them.”

“The people of Isis were involved in a horrific war with a neighboring planet and it lasted for thousands of years, which was a long time even for them.
Once Selene came into power she tried her best to end it, wanting peace. She finally obtained it but not before a great tragedy had struck.”  Jace stopped for a moment, found his audience at complete attention and continued on.

“Her daughter, her only child because the women of Isis can only carry one, was in love with the prince of the neighboring planet. No one knew how they met, but they instantly fell in love and never wanted to be parted. One day the princess snuck over to the prince’s planet in disguise, hoping they could run away together. Unfortunately she was caught by the guard and once her captures found out she was from Isis, they tortured and killed her.  The prince, so distraught, killed himself so that he might be with his love again. It was a great tragedy to both planets.”

“Not to mention very Shakespearean.” Rei remarked with a note of sorrow in her voice. Jace was startled, given her indifferent demeanor, and shifted his gaze over to Mina.. who tried her best to hide the glassiness of her eyes.

“After that Selene made a pact with the neighboring king. Selene never wanted there to be innocent blood shed again, so they enacted the Serenity Edict, named after her late daughter.  It started slowly, a few planets joining in, but eventually they built Silver Alliance; moving throughout the galaxies, spreading peace.”

“They’ve been going strong for the last few hundred years. The king is no longer alive, but Selene is now the Chairwoman of the Alliance.”

“She’s still alive?” Mina looked slightly awed.

“Of course. Relatively speaking she’s still quite young.”

“Not that this isn’t fascinating, but is there a point to this?” Rei cut in.

“I wouldn’t be here if there wasn’t.” Jace said evenly. “Even though Selene’s heart is in the right place and there is no doubt that those planets under the treaty are better off, there are those who want to restore Chaos to the universe. Casus Belli is one of these groups.”

“I heard of them while I was in Interpol,“ Mina mused. “They were weapons dealers during the war, correct?”

“Mmm, they were.” Jace nodded. “But they were-are much more than that.  They want power, but unlike Silver Alliance, whose main goal is equality and peace, they want Totalitarian rule of the galaxy.  They are hateful, spiteful and, for lack of a better word, evil.”

“Earth has become a pivotal piece. We fear if Casus Belli gains control here it will only be a matter of time before they strike out and cause an intergalactic war.  We’re in need of skilled people who can help us bring down their chain of command." Jace turned to Mina with charming smile. “People like you.”

“I’m the commandeering officer of a small, elite group known as the Pax Team,“ He explained. “And I would like you to join.”

“What happens if I don’t?” Mina eyed him warily.

“Nothing,” he shrugged. “I find someone else, but I fear they won’t be up to your caliber.”

“She’ll do it.” Rei stated from her seat and Mina nearly jumped out of hers.

“Excuse me?” Mina swiveled around to glare at Rei.

“Oh come on, like you were going to say no.” Rei rolled her eyes at Mina before settling on Jace. “She’ll join and so will we.”

“Really?” Mina blinked dumbly at the raven haired girl.

“Sure, why not? We’re a team, after all, and it sounds like the General could use all the help he can get.”

“Excellent!” Jace stood up and clapped his hands. “I’ll let you pack up some necessities and then we can go back to HQ.”

Mina sat in shock for a moment before Rei tugged her up from her chair and started to lead her up stairs to pack. Jace smiled at them and started to amuse himself  by looking over Zane’s computers.

Zane, however, was still sitting dumbly in his seat. “Did anyone think to ask how I felt about this!?”

'm re-reading from the beginning to refresh my memory. I wouldn't mind more Mina/Zane interaction.
With hints of unrequited romance. Their dynamic made me smile. *NUDGE*
